Student Housing Options For UC Irvine Residents
Contributed by UC Irvine student writer Neelansh Khare.
One of the biggest transitions from my life back home to my life in Irvine was living independently. This was the first time I would be living completely by myself away from family and unable to go back home for the entire academic year. The decision of whether to live on campus or off campus was a big deal as it determined where I would live for at least the next nine months. In the end, I decided to live on campus for my first year, and intend to move off campus for the next three! Here is some brief information about both options.
Student Dorms
We have two main freshman housing communities: Middle Earth and Mesa Court. Each of them have two types of dorms, the towers or the classics.
While dorming, you can either have single, double, triple, or quad and so you can rank your preference based on how many people you would like to share your room with!
The dorms are built to encourage social interaction with beautiful common spaces, study rooms, and a community style living arrangement.
You will share your bathrooms with multiple rooms, and it ranges from 2-4 rooms.
The custodial staff are the friendliest and any problem is handled by them immediately!
Furthermore, living in freshman housing requires you to be enrolled in a meal plan.
Arroyo Vista is an alternative, communal-living style option for continuing students, which does not require residents to get a meal plan.
On-Campus Apartments
There are six different on-campus housing communities called ACC Apartments, with various different floor plans ranging from townhomes, apartments, and more.
You can choose to have your own full sized room, or share with one other person. Furthermore, you can choose to have up to four rooms in your house based on which floor plan you select.
Depending on which community you live in, utilities are included in rent price and do not vary from month to month.
There are community assistants and community held programs (since these are student-only housing communities) to foster a sense of community between you and your fellow residents.
Cleaning is your sole responsibility, but staff is available if there are any issues with facilities.
All apartment units are furnished.
Open to all continuing students!
Off-Campus Housing
Around UC Irvine, we have a variety of housing options which are extremely close to campus:
These apartments are residential neighborhoods. There is no guarantee that your neighbors will be other students.
No community assistants or any sense of fostering a community is done by the housing complex owners.
Rent varies depending on when you get your quote but is locked in once you acquire a quote. You can extend your lease indefinitely as well.
These apartments are not furnished.
